Imsouane became famous in the late 70’s among European surfer hippies. This little town on the coast just down from Essaouira hosts the longest right wave in Africa, which makes it a popular (and cheap) destination for surfers from all around the world.
Surf
There are two surfable beaches in Imsouane: The Bay, famous for its right wave, is protected by the pier, making it a safe place for beginners as well. There are plenty of surf shops around, board + wetsuit rental starts from 100 dirhams (around 10€) per day.
Further up on the road, you can find The Cathedral, a beach where you can have the most beautiful sunset surf sessions. It’s more for intermediate/advanced surfers, but depending on the conditions beginners can also enjoy the place.
Vibes and safety
The surf scene in Imsouane is multicultural, there are all levels from beginners to pros, and in general, there is a nice and friendly vibe in and out of the water. We always felt safe, nobody bothered us and it was normal for women to wear bikinis on the beach.
Food & Drinks
On the beach and nearby you will find a wide range of restaurants, coffee places, and surf shops. What makes it interesting is that some of them are cute, bohemian-style cozy places serving Pinterest-worthy plates and drinks, while others will be little family-run businesses with basic settings, offering tajines (typical Moroccan food) and fish made right in front of you on the coal and sometimes in eyebrow-raising conditions. But their food will also be delicious, and cheaper and you will feel like you are having dinner as a family.
Local animals
There is a massive amount of stray cats and dogs, usually around restaurants or just on the side of the road asking for food and a little love. In Morocco animals coexist with people, they are welcomed in restaurants and everyone feeds them.
Accommodation
There are plenty of hostels, Airbnb, and riads offering accommodation for a fair price and everything is at a walkable distance from the beach. Staff usually speaks good English since most of the places are owned by foreigners.
Summary
Imsouane is a great destination if you want to go on a cheap surf trip and you’re looking for a non-typical experience. If you visit multiple places in Morocco, make sure to spend at least 3-4 days here to catch the place’s essence.
